Didi Chuxing (滴滴) is the mainstream ride-hailing network for taxis and private cars across hundreds of Chinese cities. For visitors it replaces street-hail anxiety: you set the pin, see the price, pay in-app, and share the trip.
This guide is the foreigner setup path — standalone app and mini-program options, payments, airport tips, and failures. Pair with Amap for Chinese addresses and Alipay / WeChat Pay for checkout.
Install: app vs WeChat / Alipay mini-program
- Standalone DiDi app — search the international / China ride-hailing listing; switch Language to English in Settings.
- Mini-program — inside WeChat or Alipay, search DiDi / 滴滴. Useful if app-store installs fail in-country.
- Sign up with a mobile number that can receive SMS (home roaming or China eSIM). If SMS never arrives, try OAuth via WeChat/Alipay after those wallets work.
Add payment so the driver isn't hunting cash
Bind a supported foreign card inside Didi where offered, or pay via linked Alipay / WeChat Pay at trip end. Enable auto-deduct if available so you are not fumbling QR codes on the curb.
Street taxis hailed offline may still want meter cash/QR — Didi's point is avoiding that negotiation.
Book a ride without Mandarin
- Pin pickup precisely (hotel lobby entrance, not the building centroid across a highway).
- Paste destination from Amap / hotel WeChat in Chinese characters when possible.
- Choose Express / taxi class; read the fare estimate before confirming.
- When the car arrives, match plate + show the in-app verification code or last digits the driver asks for.
- Use Share Trip with a friend for late-night airport runs.
Airports, stations, and surge
- Follow in-app pickup zone maps — big hubs have designated Didi/taxi waiting decks.
- Expect surge in rain, concerts, and national holidays.
- Luggage: add a note or choose a larger vehicle class when the UI offers it.
- If no cars accept, walk to the official taxi queue as backup; have the Chinese hotel name ready.
When Didi is the wrong tool
Multi-stop sightseeing days, Great Wall sections without easy drop-offs, or travelers who want door-to-door English help all day are better on a chartered car or a custom bid via HeroGuide. Use Didi for point A→B; use a guide when the day has five pins and ticket timing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Didi work in English?
Yes — the main app and many mini-program flows offer English. Driver chat may still be Chinese; use in-app translate or keep destinations as map pins.
Can foreigners pay for Didi with Visa?
Often via in-app international card support or by paying through Alipay/WeChat Pay with a linked foreign card. Set payment up before you need a 5 a.m. airport ride.
Is Uber available in mainland China?
Not as a visitor replacement for Didi. Use Didi (or metro/taxis) instead.
What if the driver calls and I can't speak Chinese?
Stay at the pinned spot, reply with the in-app translator if available, or walk to the marked pickup zone. Showing the plate screen usually resolves mismatches.
